BAPTISM DEBATE WITH R.C SPROUL AND JOHN MACARTHUR

As Charles Spurgeon and John MacArthur share the same birthday on June 19, I will present this debate with John MacArthur and the late R.C Sproul where they debate on whether infants should be baptized.

Just a note of reminder, I am for infant baptism and I know many Christians who cannot agree with it but nevertheless, I am not breaking fellowship with them. As long as they believe in Jesus Christ as King, I count them as my brothers and sisters in Christ.

Today my friend, co-defender of the truth and theological giant is standing in the presence of our Lord whom he loved and served faithfully. R.C. Sproul has stood with me for decades in every major theological controversy and I will dearly miss him. There is no one like him.

Baptism Debate with R.C. Sproul and John MacArthur

The church’s practice of infant baptism came under attack in the sixteenth century. Since that time, many Christian churches have rallied against the practice, administering baptism only to believing adults. From Ligonier Ministries’ 1997 Pasadena Regional Conference, Drs. John MacArthur Jr. and R.C. Sproul discuss their views on the biblical meaning and mode of Christian baptism. Dr. MacArthur presents the credobaptist position and Dr. Sproul presents the historic paedo(infant) Baptist position.

It is this one Spirit who makes it possible for an infant to be regenerated . . . when that infant is brought to baptism; and it is through this one Spirit that the infant so presented is reborn. For it is not written, 'Unless a man be born again by the will of his parents' or 'by the faith of those presenting him or ministering to him,' but, 'Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Spirit.' The water, therefore, manifesting exteriorly the sacrament of grace, and the Spirit effecting interiorly the benefit of grace, both regenerate in one Christ that man who was generated in Adam. - Augustine of Hippo

In Colossians 2:12 and 1 Peter 3:21 baptism is an expression of the faith of the person being baptized. I [do] not see how an infant could properly receive this ordinance as an expression of his or her faith. – John Piper
