70 YEARS LATER, WE REMEMBER JIM ELLIOT

Live every day as if the Son of Man were at the door, and gear your thinking to the fleeting moment. Just how can it be redeemed? Walk as if the next step would carry you across the threshold of Heaven. Pray. That saint who advances on his knees never retreats. - Jim Elliot

70 years ago on this date, January 8, 1956, Missionary James Elliot, who was one of five missionaries killed while participating in Operation Auca, an attempt to evangelize the Huaorani people of Ecuador.

To remember this martyr, I will first post one of his quotes and explain why it is my trigger quote before posting another nine of his quotes.

I love that quote by Jim Elliot, as it is an important reminder to us that we should live as though it is your last day on earth. It could be either your death or the return of Jesus Christ, either way means we are out of this world. Jim knew that he could die any day, that is why he reminded himself and his readers to prepare for death, as we do not know when it will come.

These two bible verses come to my mind whenever I remember this quote:

So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. – Psalm 90:12 (KJV)

The will of God is always a bigger thing than we bargain for, but we must believe that whatever it involves, it is good, acceptable and perfect. - Jim Elliot

God, I pray Thee, light these idle sticks of my life and may I burn for Thee. Consume my life, my God, for it is Thine. I seek not a long life, but a full one, like you, Lord Jesus. - Jim Elliot

Lord, give me firmness without hardness, steadfastness without dogmatism, love without weakness. - Jim Elliot

Father, let me be weak that I might loose my clutch on everything temporal. My life, my reputation, my possessions, Lord, let me loose the tension of the grasping hand. Even, Father, would I lose the love of fondling. How often I have released a grasp only to retain what I prized by 'harmless' longing, the fondling touch. Rather, open my hand to received the nail of Calvary, as Christ's was opened- that I, releasing all, might be released, unleashed from all that binds me now. He thought Heaven, yea, equality with God, not a thing to be clutched at. So let me release my grasp. - Jim Elliot

Father, make of me a crisis man. Bring those I contact to decision. Let me not be a milepost on a single road; make me a fork, that men must turn one way or another on facing Christ in me. - Jim Elliot

Father, take my life, yea, my blood if Thou wilt, and consume it with Thine enveloping fire. I would not save it, for it is not mine to save. Have it Lord, have it all. Pour out my life as an oblation for the world. Blood is only of value as it flows before Thine altar - Jim Elliot

Lord, make my way prosperous not that I achieve high station, but that my life be an exhibit to the value of knowing God. - Jim Elliot

Once we truly grasp the message of the New Testament, it is impossible to read the Old Testament again without seeing Christ on every page, in every story, foreshadowed or anticipated in every event and narrative. The Bible must be read as a whole, beginning with Genesis and ending with Revelation, letting promise and fulfillment guide or expectations for what we will find there. — Michael Horton

BIBLE READING PLAN 2026

“Lord, thank you for this time you’ve given me to open your Word and discover who you are. Thank you that you don’t leave us in the dark about who you are and what you are doing in the world, but that you have revealed yourself and your will through the Bible, your sacred words to us. Lord, I need wisdom as I read your Word. You promise us in James 1:5 that we only have to ask for wisdom to receive it. Lord, please give me your wisdom now as I approach your word. Help me discern the truth of this text. Help me not rely on my own understanding. Thank you God for the clarity, encouragement and hope your Word brings. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.”
